There is such a vast array of therapeutic modalities offered today that it may feel overwhelming for a mental health consumer such as yourself to discern what form of therapy would best fit your needs. My hope is for this article to illuminate some of the benefits of EMDR and some opportunities for healing that may be possible for you through this somatic work.
EMDR (“Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing”) is a therapeutic modality that helps people heal from traumatic events and/or adverse life experiences.
Is it the number one recommended treatment by the Department of Veteran Affairs for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Acute Stress Disorder, and/or or complex trauma. Generally, people who seek out treatment for EMDR are those who have been engaging in talk therapy and have seemed to “hit a wall” or don’t feel like they’re getting anything out of it. However, you don’t have to have experience in talk therapy to begin EMDR therapy. EMDR is also beneficial for those have suffer from severe anxiety and/or attachment and relationship issues.
In my training, I was immediately drawn to this modality when I learned that a few sessions of EMDR were just as effective as months of talk therapy treatment. Since then, I’ve witnessed countless sessions, where my clients have felt lighter and freer from the pain they’ve experienced from their past after receiving this treatment.
People have been able to rediscover a sense of agency and freedom without the painful memories from the past assaulting their day-to-day living.
As a result of this work, I’ve witnessed couples transform their conflict resolution styles, creating more warmth and safety amid disagreements. I’ve also observed parents being more patient and loving towards their children. I’ve seen those who suffer from higher levels of day-to-day anxiety be able to live more balanced and relaxed lifestyles.
